Registration 2015/2016 Season

We are anticipating a full membership again for the 2015/2016 season and as such will have early registration available for returning members.
Early Registration will begin Aug 16 and end Sept 13. Once we are full, registration will be closed even if that occurs before the Sept 13 deadline. If we are not full by that time, we will open registration to new members.
There is a slight increase in fees this year: $630 to swim from Sept 1- Aug 31. (This includes the MSABC insurance fee of $40).
Registration consists of:

  • MSABC waiver
  • Winskill Otters registration
  • 2 cheques of $315 each, dated Sept 1, 2015 and January 1, 2016

Annual General Meeting

Our annual general meeting will be held after swim practice on Sunday, September 13, 2015. Please come out and learn more about your club, your executive and share your ideas on how we can make our club better. We will put on the coffee, if everyone will bring a snack to share. It is a great way to kick off the new season!

Summer Schedule

Every year, Winskill pool closes for their annual maintenance and this year is no exception. The pool will be closed from August 9th to August 23rd, inclusive. During that time, we will have only Sunday swim times at Ladner Outdoor Pool and Watermania Pool. The times are as follows:

  • Sunday, August 9th: 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. – Ladner Outdoor Pool
  • Sunday, August 16th and 23rd: 8:30 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. – Watermania Pool in Richmond (Long Course)
  • NO practices on August 11, 13, 18 and 20th

In addition, typically every summer, we reduce our swim times to 1 hour on Sundays, however this summer we will keep with our regular 11⁄2 hour swim practices.

Josh Baerg

Some of you may have seen a new face helping out with some of our coaching – Josh Baerg is one of our member’s, Barb Baerg’s, son. Josh started swimming when he was 13 years old with the Winskill Dolphins. By 15, he was competing at the Canadian Age-Group Nationals and Western Senior Nationals. Josh had great success at the Deaf Pan American games in Brazil and in Bulgaria for the Deaflympics. When he’s not coaching the Ladner Stingrays or helping out with the Otters, he is taking his Bachelor of Geography at the University of Lethbridge. Thanks for helping out!

Last Two Swim Meets of the Year

We have the last 2 meets of this year’s competition schedule coming up quickly. The first meet is in Burnaby and it is a small, fun meet that only takes up an afternoon.  If you want to go to this meet, you have to act fast as the entry deadline is March 29th.

The second and final meet is the Master swimming BC Provincial Championships hosted again by the Nanaimo Ebbtides. Anytime this club has hosted a meet, it has been really well run with a terrific banquet with super food. The entry deadline for this is April 15th and you can enter on-line. It would be great to have a big team for Provincials. Even if you are not a regular at competing, this would still be fun. We car-pool over on Friday and swim the relay (unless you want to do a 1500 free) and return on Sunday after the meet. There are events for everyone.

If you want to go to either of these meets, the information is on the MSABC web site. Open the web site, then go to “swim in a Meet” and click on the meet you want to enter. For Provincials, some of us are staying at the Best Western Dorchester Hotel. It is just down the road from the pool.  Also, to help keep the cost down, we buddy up and share rooms. If you are interested in sharing a room, let us know and we will get you in touch with someone who needs a roommate.

Come to Nanaimo and join the fun of swimming with what is probably the noisiest, cheering-est team in Master Swimming BC.

Stoke and turn/butterfly clinic

Mark your calendars, now, for Sunday, February 1st 8:00 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. for our stoke and turn/butterfly clinic with Ben Keast of the Winskill Dolphins. You don’t need to know how to do fly at all to get a lot out of this clinic. Ben will break the stroke down into parts, so we can all learn this challenging stroke. He will also help us with our turns! Ben is a great coach and has done several clinics for the Otters in the past. Don’t miss it!
